An Unwelcome Visitor

The connection between the Brown Rat and people has never been easy. Miscommunication and a bad reputation has given many people the perspective that rats can only be creatures we have to fear or hate especially in urban settings. This is the story of one man and his garden with an unwelcome visitor.

Across the UK people spend time making their gardens a peaceful haven or a social paradise for enjoying their time in. A favourite pastime for many people is to feed common birds that like to visit their gardens, something many people can appreciate. Although by having a reliable food source it can attract more than what many people bargain for. The Brown Rat, Rattus norvegicus, an often misunderstood creature known for their bad reputation for causing mayhem and carriers of disease. Always on the look out for a quick and easy meal these sneaky scavengers find themselves caught up in between people and their peaceful havens. Without a second thought traps and poisons are more often then not instantly bought to get rid of these unwelcome visitors. However, if rats are not causing damage to the property or garden why can they not enjoy the food which is provided for another species? Can people ever become less selective about the wildlife they let visit their gardens or will the conflict always be present?
